Tanjung Puting National Park with bizarre proboscis monkeys, orangutans, clouded leopards,with bizarre proboscis monkeys, orangutans, clouded leopards,sun bears, six primate species, walking mudskipper fish, rare and colorful birds includingStorm’s storks, Bulwer’s pheasants, and famous for Birute Galdikas’ Camp Leakey Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. This center, founded in 1986 and funded by Orangutan FoundationInternational (www.orangutan.org), is the most important in Indonesia for conservation andrehabilitation of the red apes. Also Kutai National Park with Sumatran rhinos, proboscis monkeys,bantengs, 300 bird species; Kayan Mentarang, Borneo’s largest remaining rain forest, with sunbears, pangolins, clouded leopards, spectacular wild pig migrations; and a new 2,660-squaremile(6,880-km2) area cooperatively reserved since 1994 joining Bentuang-Karimum here withLanjak Entimau in Sarawak (see p.615), with important populations of rhinos, leopards, orangutans,bear-cats, and six entirely new species discovered on the Sarawak side, including a new snake and terrestrial crab but, at least until recently, few visitor facilities.
